Everyday Speech skill: School Rules

Lesson Plans to Teach School Rules

Navigating the complexity of school rules can feel like a minefield for some students. This is especially true for students with an Autism Spectrum Disorder, a Developmental Disability, or various other social and emotional needs.

Disobeying the rules isn’t necessarily indicative of an unruly nature — it may simply reflect a child’s struggle to understand what is considered acceptable behavior. Education professionals are increasingly seeing a need to teach all students about acceptable behaviors in a general education setting. By teaching children both which rules exist and why they exist, we can help them take responsibility for their actions and develop respectful behavioral patterns.

Why Is Learning School Rules Important?

Following the rules goes beyond simple classroom management. It creates a lifelong rubric for how to operate within guidelines. Teaching children school rules, therefore, involves teaching them how to interact with authority figures, how to understand the difference between right and wrong, how to show respect for others and much more. The goal of such lessons is to create a more rule-abiding classroom and to teach students the importance of understanding and respecting boundaries in their environment.

Everyday Speech School Rule Lesson Plans

As a response to the need for school rule-focused teaching material, Everyday Speech has created a curriculum that includes a series of interactive lesson plans you can administer to teach SEL skills in a classroom, small group, or one-on-one setting. Our curriculum includes instruction on special skill sets such as:

  • Following classroom routines
  • Following directions
  • Listening in school
  • Staying quiet in class
  • Asking for help
  • Working with a group
  • Showing respect

Throughout the unit, children will learn the ins and outs of acceptable behaviors in school. Through modeled videos, games and worksheets, they will receive an introduction to respecting their surroundings, peers and teachers and understanding why these skills are so important.
