Understanding Relationships and the Relationship Ruler: A Guide for Educators

Introduction

As educators, we strive to help our students develop healthy relationships and navigate social situations effectively. One essential skill in this process is understanding the different levels of relationships and how our behaviors may vary depending on the closeness of those relationships. The Relationship Ruler is a tool that can help students identify and categorize the various connections they have with people in their lives. This blog post will explore the importance of understanding relationships, provide a no-prep activity to practice using the Relationship Ruler, and offer discussion questions and related skills to further enhance social-emotional learning.

No-Prep Activity: Relationship Ruler Role-Play

This activity requires no preparation or materials from the educator and is suitable for students of all ages. The goal of the activity is to help students practice using the Relationship Ruler by role-playing different scenarios with their peers.

  1. Divide the class into small groups of 3-4 students.
  2. Ask each group to come up with a list of 5-6 people or types of relationships (e.g., family, close friends, acquaintances, strangers).
  3. Each group should then create a brief scenario involving one person from their list and a specific action or behavior (e.g., sharing personal information, giving a hug, asking for help).
  4. Have the groups take turns role-playing their scenarios for the class, with one student acting as the person from their list and the others responding to the action or behavior based on their understanding of the Relationship Ruler.
  5. After each role-play, facilitate a brief discussion within the group about whether the response was appropriate given the level of the relationship.

This activity not only helps students practice using the Relationship Ruler, but also encourages them to think critically about their own relationships and how their behaviors may change depending on the person they are interacting with.
