Teaching PreK Students Emotion ID Skills: Activities and Discussion Questions

Introduction

Teaching Emotion ID skills is crucial for the social-emotional development of PreK students. Being able to identify emotions helps young children develop empathy and form healthy relationships. In this blog post, we will discuss a no-prep activity, discussion questions, and related skills to help educators teach Emotion ID skills to their students.

No-Prep Activity: Emotion ID Game

This activity requires no preparation or materials from the educator. Here’s how to play the Emotion ID game:

  1. Ask students to sit in a circle facing each other.
  2. Choose one student to be the “emotion actor.” This student will think of an emotion and act it out using facial expressions, body language, and tone of voice.
  3. Have the other students observe the “emotion actor” and try to guess the emotion being portrayed.
  4. After the students have guessed the emotion, discuss the clues that helped them figure it out, such as facial expressions, tone of voice, and body language.
  5. Continue playing by choosing a new “emotion actor” and repeating the process.

This activity encourages students to practice identifying emotions using various clues, helping them develop their Emotion ID skills.
