Introduction

Rejection is a common experience for everyone, including middle school students. It can be challenging to deal with, but learning to handle rejection is an essential life skill.   4. Have each pair act out their scenario, focusing on using positive self-talk, finding alternative activities, and seeking out other friends for support.
  5. Once all pairs have had a chance to role-play, bring the class back together for a group discussion about their experiences and what they learned from the activity.

Use these questions to stimulate further discussion among students:

  • How did it feel to be in the role of the person experiencing rejection? How did it feel to be in the role of the person causing the rejection?
  • What strategies did you use to cope with rejection during the role-play? Which strategies were most effective for you?
  • How can we support our friends when they experience rejection?
  • Why is it important to learn how to handle rejection in a healthy way?
  • Can you think of a time when you experienced rejection and used positive self-talk or other coping strategies to feel better?
