Introduction

Teasing is a common experience for everyone, especially in high school. It can lead to feelings of sadness, anger, and frustration. No-Prep Activity: Role-Playing Scenarios

This activity requires no preparation or materials from the educator and helps students practice coping strategies in a safe environment. Divide the students into small groups and provide them with a few scenarios where teasing might occur. In each scenario, one student will play the role of the teaser, while another will be the person being teased. The remaining students will act as observers and provide feedback on how well the person being teased handled the situation.

During the role-play, encourage the students to apply the following strategies:

  • Use positive self-talk: This means repeating a positive phrase to themselves to boost their confidence and self-esteem.
  • Express their feelings: Students should calmly communicate their feelings to the person teasing them, using phrases like “I don’t like that” or “I feel upset when you do that.”
  • Walk away: If the situation becomes too much to handle, students should be encouraged to remove themselves from the situation without being disrespectful or retaliating.

Discussion Questions

After the role-playing activity, facilitate a group discussion using the following questions:

  1. How did it feel to use the strategies during the role-play? Which strategy was the most effective for you?
  2. How do you think the person teasing might feel after you express your feelings or walk away from the situation?
  3. Why is it important to handle teasing situations with respect and without retaliation?
  4. Can you think of a time when you successfully handled teasing in your own life? What strategies did you use?
  5. How can you support your peers who may be experiencing teasing?
