How I use Will of the Wheel to get my groups engaged

Hey, Brittany from Everyday Speech here!

Today I wanted to share one of my favorite online games with you, Will of the Wheel! My students absolutely love this game, and it is a perfect way to keep them engaged. Today, I’ll be talking about the Basic Conversation Skills edition of the game.

This game is a great way to test your students’ comprehension level in a skill area because it asks them to answer a variety of question prompts including drawing a concept, describing it to others, acting it out, or watching video clips.

I really like that this game reinforces many of our Everyday Speech concepts found in other materials including video lessons, premium packets, and activity worksheets. For instance, this game has queries on Comment, Question, Compliment which is a concept we discuss in other materials. This game covers all basic conversation skills including: initiating a conversation, staying on topic, shifting the topic, and maintaining a conversation.

Another important aspect of the game is that all group members are engaged during other players’ turns. We ask the group to rate the current player’s performance or answer. This not only gives practice in monitoring someone else, but also allows them to really think about the skill and stay active even when it’s not their turn.

There are options to individualize the game for your group by selecting the number of players/teams, choosing the number of turns, and toggling background sounds or music on/off. Remember, you can always save mid-game and come back later. This is helpful for big groups or shorter therapy sessions.

Here’s the link to the game in the Social Learning Platform.

Talk soon,

Brittany
