Emotion ID: A Fun Game to Teach Kindergarten Students About Emotions

Introduction

As educators, we understand the importance of helping our kindergarten students develop a strong foundation in social-emotional learning. One essential skill for young learners is the ability to recognize and understand emotions. Emotion ID is a fun and engaging game designed to help students identify emotions in themselves and others by focusing on facial expressions, tone of voice, and the words being used. In this blog post, we will discuss a no-prep activity for Emotion ID, provide discussion questions, and explore related skills for students.

No-Prep Activity: Emotion ID Guessing Game

This activity requires no preparation or materials from the educator. To play the Emotion ID Guessing Game, have students sit in a circle. Choose one student to be the “Emotion Actor.” The Emotion Actor will think of an emotion and then act it out using their facial expressions, tone of voice, and words. The rest of the students will then guess the emotion being portrayed. Once the correct emotion is identified, the Emotion Actor can share the clues they used to portray the emotion. Repeat the process with a new Emotion Actor until all students have had a turn.

Discussion Questions

  1. What facial expressions did you notice the Emotion Actor using? How did these expressions help you identify the emotion?
  2. How did the Emotion Actor’s tone of voice change when they were acting out the emotion? What clues did their tone provide?
  3. What words did the Emotion Actor use to express their emotion? How did these words help you understand how they were feeling?
  4. Why is it important to be able to recognize and understand emotions in ourselves and others?
  5. Can you think of a time when you had to use these skills to identify someone’s emotions in a real-life situation? How did it help you?
