Wake Up Your Body: Stretching Activities for Special Education Students

Introduction: In this blog post, we will discuss an engaging and energizing activity for Special Education students that incorporates principles of Social-Emotional Learning (SEL). Stretching is a wonderful way to help students wake up their bodies and minds, and can also provide a calming and centering effect. In addition to the physical benefits, stretching activities can help students develop self-awareness, focus, and relaxation techniques.

No-Prep Activity: Energizing Stretching Sequence

This activity requires no preparation or materials from the educator and can be done in any setting. The Energizing Stretching Sequence helps students wake up their bodies and minds, preparing them for a productive day of learning.

Instructions:

  1. Have students find their own space on the floor, ensuring they are not too close to their neighbors.
  2. Ask students to shake their hands for 5 seconds, counting down together: 5, 4, 3, 2, 1.
  3. Next, instruct students to roll their shoulders in small circles for 5 seconds, counting down together: 5, 4, 3, 2, 1.
  4. Have students give their shoulders one big squeeze, then place their hands on their lower backs.
  5. Guide students through a gentle backbend, looking up at the sky, and carefully standing back up.
  6. Ask students to reach their arms high above their heads, stretching as tall as they can.
  7. Finish the sequence with 3 deep breaths in and out, encouraging students to relax their bodies and focus on their breath.

After completing the Energizing Stretching Sequence, ask students how they feel. Are they more awake and focused? Are they feeling happy or relaxed? This simple activity can help set a positive tone for the day.
