Teaching Positive Social Choices with Fork in the Road

Introduction

As educators, it’s essential to help our students develop positive social skills and understand the impact of their actions on others. One effective way to teach these skills is through interactive activities that promote reflection and discussion. Introducing Fork in the Road, a game that encourages students to analyze different behaviors and their potential outcomes. This game is designed to help students think about how their actions can make others feel and choose the best path in various social situations. Focused on the concept of “Think It or Say It,” the game helps students decide when it’s best to share their thoughts or keep them to themselves.

No-Prep Activity

In this no-prep activity, students will watch a series of videos featuring characters faced with various social situations. Each character will encounter a “Social Fork,” where they must decide between two different actions. One action may lead to a positive outcome, while the other may result in negative consequences. The students’ job is to choose the best path for each character. After watching the videos, students will discuss their choices and the reasons behind them.

To begin, divide the students into small groups. Play the first video, pausing at the Social Fork moment. Ask each group to discuss and decide which path the character should take. After each group has made their decision, resume the video and reveal the outcome. Repeat this process for each video, allowing students to reflect on their choices and discuss the impact of the character’s actions on others.

Discussion Questions

  1. Why is it important to think before we speak? How can our words affect others?
  2. Can you share an example from your own life when you faced a social fork? What decision did you make, and what was the outcome?
  3. How can we support our friends and classmates in making positive social choices?
  4. What strategies can we use to help us decide when it’s best to share our thoughts or keep them to ourselves?
  5. How can we learn from our mistakes and make better choices in future social situations?
