Respectful Relationship Skills: Teaching Middle School Students to Break Up Gracefully

Introduction

Relationships are an essential aspect of human life, and learning how to navigate them successfully is a crucial skill for middle school students. It’s important to teach students how to recognize when a relationship isn’t working and how to end it respectfully. This blog post presents a no-prep activity, discussion questions, and related skills to help educators guide their students in developing these essential social-emotional learning skills.

No-Prep Activity

This activity, called “The Break-Up Scenario,” is designed to help students practice ending a relationship with respect and empathy. No preparation or materials are required from the educator.

  1. Divide the class into pairs.
  2. Ask each pair to create a fictional scenario in which they are in a relationship that is no longer working.
  3. Using the tips provided in the introduction, have one student in each pair practice ending the relationship respectfully by expressing their feelings and explaining their decision.
  4. Encourage the other student to respond to the break-up, allowing them to practice reacting in a respectful and healthy manner.
  5. Afterward, have the students switch roles and repeat the exercise.
  6. Conclude the activity by discussing the importance of respectful communication and empathy in ending relationships.

  • How can we show empathy and understanding for the person we’re breaking up with, even though we’re ending the relationship?
