Mindfulness Stretching: A Calming Activity for Students

Mindfulness is a powerful tool that can help students develop self-awareness, focus, and emotional regulation. Through mindfulness-focused stretching activities, educators can teach students to empty their minds of distracting thoughts and focus on the present moment. This blog post will provide a no-prep activity that can be easily implemented in the classroom, along with discussion questions, related skills, and next steps to further explore mindfulness and its benefits.

No-Prep Activity: Mindful Stretching Break

This activity requires no preparation or materials, making it an ideal choice for busy educators. Follow these simple steps to guide your students through a mindful stretching break:

  1. Have students find their own space, either seated on the floor or in their chairs, ensuring they are in a comfortable and relaxed position.
  2. Encourage students to sit with good posture, relaxing their shoulders, neck, and face.
  3. Ask students to close their eyes and take a moment to clear their thoughts by focusing on their breath. Guide them through three deep breaths together, inhaling and exhaling slowly.
  4. Once their minds are clear, have students open their eyes and begin stretching. Start by having them turn their heads to look over their right shoulder, then slowly over their left shoulder. Bring their heads back to the center and gently lower their chins to their chests, holding for a count of three. Next, have them tilt their heads back and point their chins to the ceiling, holding for another count of three.
  5. Continue guiding students through gentle stretches, such as placing their right hand on their head and gently pulling their head to the right for a neck stretch, then repeating on the left side.

Throughout the activity, remind students to focus on the sensations and movements of their bodies, letting go of any outside thoughts or distractions.
