Discovering Animal Yoga: A Calming Activity for Special Education Students

Introduction

As educators, we are always seeking new and engaging ways to help our students develop essential social-emotional skills. One such activity that has proven to be effective and enjoyable is animal yoga. By incorporating animal-themed poses and movements, students can learn to focus on their breathing, develop mindfulness, and improve self-awareness in a fun and engaging way. This blog post will introduce you to animal yoga and provide a no-prep activity, discussion questions, related skills, and next steps for incorporating this calming practice into your classroom.

No-Prep Activity: Animal Yoga

This activity requires no preparation or materials, making it easy for you to implement in your classroom. Follow these steps to guide your students through a series of animal-inspired yoga poses:

  1. Turtle Pose: Have students sit on the floor with their legs crossed. Instruct them to place their hands on their knees and take deep breaths, imagining they are turtles retreating into their shells for a moment of calm.
  2. Giraffe Pose: Ask students to stand up straight with their feet hip-width apart. Extend their arms above their heads, interlocking their fingers, and gently stretch from side to side, like a tall giraffe reaching for leaves.
  3. Snake Pose: Students should lie on their stomachs with their hands flat on the floor beside their shoulders. As they inhale, they can lift their upper body off the floor, arching their backs and hissing like a snake.
  4. Bear Pose: Instruct students to stand with their feet shoulder-width apart and bend forward at the waist, letting their arms hang down like a bear. Encourage them to sway gently from side to side and take deep breaths as they do so.
  5. Lion Pose: Have students kneel on the floor and sit back on their heels. As they exhale, they can open their mouths wide, stick out their tongues, and roar like a lion, releasing any tension or stress.

Encourage students to move slowly and mindfully through each pose, focusing on their breath and the sensations in their bodies.
