Energizing Stretch Break: Boosting Energy and Mindfulness in Elementary Students

Introduction

In this blog post, we will discuss an engaging activity that incorporates principles of Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) for elementary students. The activity is focused on energizing stretch breaks, which help students clear their minds and release endorphins. Endorphins are calming chemicals in our brains that get released during exercise. By incorporating stretching into the classroom, we can help students boost their energy levels and improve their focus and overall well-being.

No-Prep Activity

This energizing stretch break activity requires no preparation or materials from the educator. To begin, have students stand up and find their own space. They should ensure they are not too close to their neighbors by extending their arms out to the sides. Students should place their feet flat on the ground, shoulder distance apart, with their arms down by their sides. Then, have them gently shake out their hands for five seconds, helping to wake up their bodies.

Next, guide students through shoulder rolls by having them roll their shoulders forward in small circles for five seconds, and then reverse the direction for another five seconds. Encourage students to give their shoulders one big squeeze up towards their ears and release.

With their feet hip-width apart, students should place their hands on their lower backs, fingers pointing down like they’re reaching into their back pockets. Have them roll their shoulders down and back once more, and take three deep breaths, inhaling and exhaling slowly. After releasing the stretch, students will move on to a quad stretch, balancing on one leg while lifting the other foot up behind them and grabbing it with their hand. They should hold this stretch for a few seconds before switching legs.
