Are Your Middle Schoolers Getting Ready to Date?
Some of your middle school students may already have expressed or shared an interest in dating. If this is the case, Everyday Speech has the materials needed to help give educators* the materials to breakdown topics related to handling a crush, asking someone on a date, going on a date, and continuing to build self-awareness skills around assessing if a relationship is working out for them.

Lesson Plan – Using Your Crush Dos and Don’ts PDF
1. Teach the Concept of Having a Crush
Start by teaching your middle school students the concept of having a ‘crush’. Explain the different physical clues or feelings that may come up when someone has a crush, including feeling nervous, shy, or giddy around them, and how this is normal!
2. Explain the Difference Between Dos and Don’ts
Now that your middle school students have a foundational understanding of what a crush is, teach your students that there are certain behaviors that are appropriate (the ‘dos’) and certain behaviors to avoid (the ‘don’ts’). Ask your students to practice perspective-taking and consider how they might feel if someone used one of the ‘don’t’ behaviors. Would they feel uncomfortable or awkward? Have an open discussion on the topic.
