Reading the Room

Whether entering a house, classroom, meeting, or party, we must enter situations by acting in a way that’s congruent with the demeanor of the group. Learners will begin to take note of the group’s behavior so that they can align with the group as they smoothly enter.

00:00:13.296 –> 00:00:15.838
Every time we share space with others,

00:00:15.853 –> 00:00:19.750
we think about the way we should act
as we approach the room or people.

00:00:20.921 –> 00:00:23.084
This is called Reading the Room.

00:00:29.186 –> 00:00:31.068
Reading the Room is looking at:

00:00:31.124 –> 00:00:32.256
the situation,

00:00:32.559 –> 00:00:33.678
peoples’ moods,

00:00:33.958 –> 00:00:36.912
and using those clues
to figure out how we should act.

00:01:05.760 –> 00:01:08.948
If we don’t Read the Room,
we could embarrass ourselves

00:01:08.973 –> 00:01:11.748
by acting in a way
that doesn’t match the situation.

00:01:20.363 –> 00:01:23.125
It’s okay to copy others
while you Read the Room

00:01:23.150 –> 00:01:25.107
and decide for yourself how to act.

00:01:33.783 –> 00:01:37.928
To help us Read the Room, first,
think about the rules for that place

00:01:37.953 –> 00:01:39.060
and what is happening.

00:01:48.521 –> 00:01:50.563
We observe the action in the room.

00:01:50.787 –> 00:01:52.214
What are others doing?

00:02:00.542 –> 00:02:04.238
Then, determine the mood of the room
by listening to the topics

00:02:04.263 –> 00:02:05.959
and overall tone of voice.

00:02:06.931 –> 00:02:10.982
Scan everyone’s body language and face
to figure out how people feel.

00:02:21.918 –> 00:02:25.027
Considering others’ feelings
helps us know how to act

00:02:25.052 –> 00:02:27.068
and makes everyone feel comfortable.

00:02:29.464 –> 00:02:31.667
Lastly, we put the clues together

00:02:31.692 –> 00:02:33.810
to make a decision on how we should act.

00:02:47.286 –> 00:02:50.076
We Read the Room
every time we enter a space

00:02:50.101 –> 00:02:50.990
with other people.

00:02:51.730 –> 00:02:53.560
To Read the Room, we can:

00:02:54.553 –> 00:02:56.515
Think about the rules for that place.

00:02:58.060 –> 00:02:59.594
Notice what others are doing.

00:03:00.830 –> 00:03:03.676
Match the mood by listening
for others’ tone of voice,

00:03:03.701 –> 00:03:04.856
and body language.

00:03:06.365 –> 00:03:08.683
Consider how others
would want us to act.

00:03:10.631 –> 00:03:13.482
Remember, we can always copy
what others are doing

00:03:13.507 –> 00:03:15.373
while we figure out how to act.
