Understanding and Managing Stress in PreK Students

Introduction

As educators, we understand the importance of helping young learners recognize and manage their feelings, especially when they are stressed or upset. Teaching students to identify these emotions allows them to develop strategies to calm down and regain control. In this blog post, we will explore a no-prep activity that encourages PreK students to understand their feelings and practice calming strategies. Additionally, we will provide discussion questions and related skills to further support their social-emotional development.

No-Prep Activity: The Calming Corner

Create a designated “calming corner” in your classroom where students can go when they feel stressed or overwhelmed. This space should be quiet, comfortable, and filled with calming items, such as soft pillows, stuffed animals, or soothing visuals. Explain to your students that they can visit the calming corner whenever they need a break to regain control of their emotions.

When a student feels stressed or upset, encourage them to take a break in the calming corner. They can sit down, take deep breaths, and focus on their feelings. After a few minutes, the student can return to their activity, feeling more relaxed and in control.

Discussion Questions

  1. How do you know when you are feeling stressed or upset? What are some signs that you need to take a break?
  2. What are some strategies you can use to calm down when you are feeling stressed or overwhelmed?
  3. How can taking a break in the calming corner help you feel better and regain control of your emotions?
  4. How does it affect others around you when you are feeling stressed or upset? How can using calming strategies help improve your relationships with your classmates?
  5. Why is it important to recognize and manage our emotions in school and at home?
