Introduction
Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) is an essential aspect of education that focuses on developing students’ self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making. This blog post introduces a simple, no-prep activity for Kindergarten educators to help their students feel good, calm their minds, and enhance their SEL skills. By incorporating stretching exercises into the daily routine, educators can promote a positive learning environment and foster students’ overall well-being.
No-Prep Activity: Feel Good Standing Stretch
This activity requires no preparation or materials and can be easily incorporated into any classroom setting. The Feel Good Standing Stretch is designed to help students relax their bodies and minds through a series of simple stretching exercises. Follow these steps to guide your students through the activity:
- Ask students to stand up and find their own space, ensuring they are not too close to their neighbors.
- Lead students through three deep breaths, inhaling deeply and exhaling slowly.
- Guide students to stretch their necks by moving their heads side to side, then in a circle, and finally in the opposite direction.
- Instruct students to bring one arm across their body and hold it in place with the other arm, stretching for five seconds. Repeat with the other arm.
- Encourage students to raise one arm and lean to the side, holding the stretch for five seconds. Repeat with the other arm.
- Ask students to reach for the sky with both hands, then carefully bend forward to touch their toes. Slowly stand back up.
- Invite students to give their bodies one last shake, signaling the end of the activity.
By engaging in this activity, students can experience physical and mental relaxation, preparing their bodies and minds for learning.
