Teaching PreK Students to Use Topic Radar for Engaging Conversations

Introduction

As educators, we understand the importance of developing social-emotional skills in our PreK students. One key skill to foster is the ability to engage in meaningful conversations with others. The concept of a Topic Radar helps young learners think about what other people like to talk about, ensuring they talk about more than just their favorite topics. By teaching students to consider the interests of others, remember what they know about them, and find common ground, we can help them develop stronger communication and social skills.

No-Prep Activity: My Topic Radar

This simple, no-prep activity is designed to help PreK students practice using their Topic Radar in a fun and engaging way. Begin by having students sit in a circle. Explain the concept of the Topic Radar to them and provide some examples, such as the conversation between Kai and Madison.

Next, choose a student to start the activity. Ask them to think of a classmate and share something they know about that person, such as a hobby, favorite food, or something they have in common. The chosen student then takes a turn, sharing something they know about another classmate, and so on. Continue the activity until everyone has had a chance to participate.

This activity encourages students to think about their classmates’ interests and find topics that can lead to meaningful conversations. It also helps them practice active listening and develop empathy for their peers.
