Encouraging Inclusivity and Collaboration in PreK Playtime

Introduction

Playtime is a crucial aspect of a child’s development, especially in the PreK years. It is during this time that children learn essential social-emotional skills, such as collaboration, inclusivity, and active listening. This blog post will introduce you to an engaging no-prep activity that can help educators foster these skills in their students, along with discussion questions and related skills to further enhance the learning experience.

No-Prep Activity: Movie Freeze Tag

Movie freeze tag is a fun and engaging twist on the classic game of freeze tag. In this version, when a student is tagged, they must say the name of a movie to become unfrozen. This activity encourages students to be open to new ideas, listen to their peers, and collaborate during playtime.

How to play:

  1. Choose one student to be “it.”
  2. The student who is “it” must chase and tag other students.
  3. When a student is tagged, they must freeze in place.
  4. To become unfrozen, the tagged student must say the name of a movie.
  5. The game continues until all students have been tagged or a predetermined time limit has been reached.

Discussion Questions

After playing movie freeze tag, use these discussion questions to stimulate further conversations about the importance of inclusivity and collaboration during playtime:

  1. How did it feel when someone listened to your idea and agreed to play the game you suggested?
  2. What are some other ways we can show that we are listening to our friends during playtime?
  3. Why do you think it’s important to include everyone’s ideas when deciding what to play?
  4. How can we make sure that everyone feels included in our games and activities?
  5. What other games can we modify to promote collaboration and inclusivity amongst our peers?

Related Skills

Along with collaboration and inclusivity, movie freeze tag can help students develop other essential social-emotional skills. Some of these related skills include:

  • Active listening: Students practice listening to their peers’ ideas and suggestions during the game.
  • Communication: Students learn how to express their ideas and preferences effectively.
  • Problem-solving: Students work together to create a game that incorporates everyone’s ideas.
  • Empathy: Students develop an understanding of the importance of including others and considering their feelings.
