Teaching Tone of Voice: The Impact on Communication

Introduction

The way our voice sounds when we talk can greatly impact the message our listeners receive. When we use a condescending tone, it can make others feel inferior and damage our relationships. This blog post will explore the importance of using a gentle tone of voice and present an activity to help educators teach students how to express their opinions in a more mindful manner. By incorporating principles of Social-Emotional Learning, students will develop better communication skills and foster positive interactions with others.

No-Prep Activity: Tone of Voice Role-Play

This activity requires no preparation or materials from the educator and can be easily implemented in the classroom. Here’s how it works:

  1. Divide the students into pairs.
  2. Ask each pair to come up with a topic they both have opinions on (e.g., favorite movie, book, or activity).
  3. Have one student express their opinion using a condescending tone, while the other listens.
  4. Switch roles, and have the other student express their opinion using a gentle tone.
  5. After both students have had a turn, ask them to discuss how they felt when their partner used a condescending tone versus a gentle tone.

This activity helps students recognize the importance of tone of voice in communication and encourages them to practice using a more mindful and respectful tone when expressing their opinions.

Discussion Questions

After completing the activity, use these questions to stimulate further discussions among students:

  1. How did you feel when your partner used a condescending tone? How about when they used a gentle tone?
  2. What differences did you notice in the way you responded to your partner based on their tone of voice?
  3. Can you think of a time when someone’s tone of voice affected how you felt about a conversation? How did that impact your relationship with that person?
  4. Why do you think it’s important to be mindful of our tone of voice when communicating with others?
  5. How can we practice using a more gentle tone of voice in our daily interactions?
