Teaching High School Students Interview Preparation Skills

Introduction

Preparing for an interview is a crucial skill that high school students need to develop for their future careers. This blog post will provide educators with a no-prep activity, discussion questions, and related skills to teach students how to effectively prepare for job interviews. By incorporating principles of Social-Emotional Learning, students will learn to communicate professionally, research potential employers, and present themselves confidently during interviews.

No-Prep Activity: Role-Play Interviews

This activity requires no preparation or materials from the educator. Divide students into pairs and ask them to take turns playing the roles of interviewer and interviewee. The interviewee should practice answering common interview questions, such as “Tell me about yourself,” “Why do you want to work here?” and “What are your strengths and weaknesses?” Encourage students to provide feedback to each other on their performance, focusing on aspects like body language, tone of voice, and the content of their answers. After the role-play, have a class discussion about the experience and what they learned from it.

Discussion Questions

  1. Why is it important to research a company before an interview? How can you use this information to your advantage during the interview process?
  2. What are some strategies for maintaining a professional tone in written and verbal communication with potential employers?
  3. How can you demonstrate confidence and enthusiasm during an interview without coming across as arrogant or over-eager?
  4. What are some examples of appropriate attire for different types of job interviews? Why is it important to dress appropriately for an interview?
  5. How can personal hygiene and grooming habits impact an interviewer’s perception of a candidate?
