Teaching Conversation Topics to Elementary Students

Lesson Plan – Using Your Free Conversation Topics Activity
1. Introduce ‘Think It or Say It’
Everyday Speech’s concept ‘Think It or Say It’ focuses on the importance of using a filter when speaking to others! Before using our free activity with your student, teach the importance of evaluating whether something should remain a thought or is appropriate to be said aloud in conversation. The ‘Think It or Say It’ concept teaches that before we speak, we consider the emotional impact of those thoughts on others. Many of our thoughts are honest judgments, but we filter or choose not to say the ones that could hurt someone. Learners will use ‘Think It or Say It’ to pause and reflect before saying thoughts out loud.

This modeling video teaches students the skills and strategies they can use to practice thinking or saying it. This video will break the skill down into easily digestible steps and also provide your student with a live video model of what it looks like to think it or say it and be mindful of others’ feelings! 3. Use Our Free Elementary Conversation Topics Activity
Our free elementary conversation topics activity is a sorting worksheet called ‘Think It or Say It: Kind or Unkind.” For this activity, students will practice the skill of ‘Think It or Say It’ conversation topics by sorting kind or unkind statements. If a statement is kind then it is okay to ‘say it’, whereas if a statement is unkind then we should just ‘think it’ to ourselves.
