Teaching Friendship Skills to Middle School Students

1. Introduce the Relationship Ruler
Everyday Speech’s Relationship Ruler is a concept that helps students understand the range of “closeness” in different types of relationships. The closeness of a relationship dictates what we say, how we say it, and how we act. With the Relationship Ruler, students will learn the different categories of relationships and the rules for sharing information and personal space at each level. The Relationship Ruler will ultimately help students understand the appropriate closeness level and behavior when it comes to making and maintaining friendships.
