Introduction
As educators, we understand the importance of teaching our students not only academic skills but also social-emotional skills. One crucial aspect of social-emotional learning is helping students recognize and understand emotions. In this blog post, we will introduce a fun and engaging activity called Emotions Bingo, designed for PreK students to learn about different emotions and how to identify them in various situations.
No-Prep Activity: Emotions Bingo
Emotions Bingo is an interactive game that requires no preparation or materials from the educator. To play the game, students will watch a video featuring different characters expressing various emotions in different situations. As the students watch the video, they will try to guess how each character is feeling and mark the corresponding emotion on their bingo board. The first student to get four emotions in a row – up, down, or diagonal – wins the game and calls out “bingo!”
Throughout the video, an icon will appear in the corner, signaling a pause for discussion. During these breaks, students will have the opportunity to talk about how the characters are feeling and why they think so. This activity not only helps students learn about emotions but also encourages them to develop empathy and understanding of others’ feelings.
Discussion Questions
- How did you know that the character was feeling a specific emotion? What clues did you see or hear?
- Can you think of a time when you felt the same emotion as the character in the video? How did you handle it?
- Why is it essential to recognize and understand other people’s emotions?
- How can we help someone who is feeling a certain emotion (e.g., sad, angry, or confused)?
- What other emotions can you think of that were not shown in the video? How would you recognize them in real life?
Related Skills
Besides recognizing and understanding emotions, there are several other related social-emotional skills that students can benefit from learning. Some of these skills include:
- Empathy: Understanding and sharing the feelings of others.

- Emotion regulation: Managing one’s emotions effectively in various situations.
- Effective communication: Expressing oneself clearly and respectfully, both verbally and non-verbally.
