Teaching PreK Students the Importance of Oral Hygiene and Social Interactions

Introduction

As educators, it’s essential to teach our students about the importance of maintaining good oral hygiene. A clean mouth and fresh breath not only contribute to overall health but also play a significant role in social interactions. In this blog post, we will discuss the significance of oral hygiene, provide a no-prep activity for educators to use in their classrooms, and offer discussion questions to further explore the topic. We will also mention related skills that can be helpful for students and encourage you to check out free sample materials at Everyday Speech.

No-Prep Activity

Here’s a fun and engaging activity that requires no preparation or materials from the educator. It’s called “The Toothbrush Relay Race.”

  1. Divide the class into two teams and have them line up at one end of the room.
  2. Place two chairs at the opposite end of the room, each with a picture of a toothpaste tube and toothbrush.
  3. Explain to the students that they will be participating in a relay race to practice proper toothbrushing techniques.
  4. When you say “go,” the first student in each line will run to the chair, pretend to squeeze toothpaste onto the toothbrush, and mime brushing their teeth for 10 seconds.
  5. Once they’ve finished “brushing,” they’ll run back to their team and tag the next person in line to repeat the process.
  6. The relay race continues until all students have had a turn. The first team to finish wins!

This activity is an entertaining way to reinforce the importance of brushing teeth and maintaining good oral hygiene.

Discussion Questions

Here are some questions to stimulate further discussions about oral hygiene and its impact on social interactions:

  1. Why is it important to brush our teeth every day?
  2. How can bad breath affect our interactions with others?
  3. What are some other ways we can maintain good oral hygiene?
  4. How can we remind ourselves to brush our teeth every morning and night?
  5. How can we help a friend who might have bad breath without hurting their feelings?

Related Skills

In addition to teaching students about oral hygiene, it’s important to introduce other related skills that can help them develop healthy habits and positive social interactions. Some of these skills include:

  • Hand washing: Proper hand washing is essential for preventing the spread of germs and maintaining good overall hygiene.
  • Personal grooming: Encouraging students to comb their hair, trim their nails, and dress neatly can help them feel confident and presentable in social situations.
  • Respecting personal space: Teaching students about respecting others’ personal space can help them navigate social interactions more effectively.
  • Effective communication: Encouraging open and honest communication can help students express their needs and feelings in a respectful manner.
