Kate’s best friend is moving and she’s very upset. When Sarah finds out, she’s more concerned with the chicken nuggets she’s going to have at lunch. She talks to Kate like nothing’s wrong. Sarah learns about Empathy – putting yourself in someone else’s shoes. When she talks to Kate again, she shows Kate that she understands how she feels.
Use Showing Empathy-Older
Once students understand feelings they can move on to the more complex concept of empathy. They can learn that showing empathy will show they can be good friends. It’s one thing to understand how another might feel and once we can do that, we can take the next step to show that we care. For a group activity, you can give students different scenarios and ask them how they show empathy.
