Social Skills Video: Hidden Social Rules – Group Food
This blog post is one in a series of entries outlining our social skills videos. Our social skills video library is up to 80 videos, each focusing on a social interaction that children and young adults has to face on a daily basis. All videos compare expected and unexpected behavior and show internal thoughts to get the perspective of everyone involved. Videos can be viewed on all your devices, including PC’s, Mac’s, iPad and Android tablets, and smartphones. The class is having a party and has some treats. When it’s Serena’s turn to take food, she touches all of the cookies and takes almost all the granola bars. Serena didn’t understand the social rules – we shouldn’t touch food we aren’t going to eat, and we should leave enough food for everyone. She didn’t know what to do, so she should observe what other people are doing. She tries again and is able to follow the hidden rules. Now the group has a fun party!

Every place we go has different social rules. How confusing! This video models a tip for students who are in a situation and don’t know what to do. They can look around and see what everyone else is doing! I like to give students different situations such you go to a library or a birthday party and brainstorm the social rules we all follow there.
