New in Assistive Technology: Airdrop for TouchChat

By Brittany Lehane May 21, 2014

UPDATE: We’ve released an eBook – “The Ultimate Guide to the iPad for Speech Pathology and Special Education”. It has all the tips and tricks you need to become an iPad master. Best of all, it’s FREE. Grab your copy here.

The communication app TouchChat came out with a new version this month and with it a cool new feature- AirDrop file sharing! TouchChat users can now easily transfer a vocabulary file they’ve made to another device or another user. The newest version is called Version 1.4.6 and can be found in your regular app updates in the App Store. TouchChat is making use of Apple’s AirDrop feature, which lets you share files quickly and easily. This is extremely useful for people backing up on multiple devices. Speech therapists could also use this to send pages between multiple devices they have in order to keep the files safe (no more pulling your hair out if the pages you make always end up deleted). Therapists could also send pages they’ve made to their co-workers.  Additionally this could be used for students who use a school’s iPad in school and have a personal iPad at home. The student’s teacher or speech therapist would share the vocabulary pages with a parent, so the pages the student uses will be the same both at school and at home. What is AirDrop? AirDrop is an easy way to transfer files from one device (meaning an iPhone, iPod, or iPad) to another. This lets users share photos, videos, apps, or web pages.   It was a new feature added with iOS 7, so anyone running the older iOS 6 won’t be able to use it. Airdrop works on the iPad 4, iPad Mini, iPhone 5, iPod Touch 5 and later generations. AirDrop uses Bluetooth to create a Wi-Fi connection between two devices, so the devices must be close enough to establish a good connection. This varies depending on the environment you’re in but could be across several rooms. Devices that can use the TouchChat Share Vocabulary Feature:

  1. iPhone 5 or Later
  2. AirDropiPad 4th generation
  3. iPad Mini
  4. iPod Touch 5th Generation
  5. iPad Air

What you Need in Order to Use AirDrop with TouchChat:

  1. iOS 7
  2. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth turned on
  3. Both devices need to be “awake”- turned on and not in sleep mode
  4. A close enough distance to the device you’re sharing to (which varies depending on the environment)

How to turn AirDrop On:

  1. Swipe up on  the bottom of your device screen to bring up the Control Center
  2. Tap AirDrop
  3. Choose from these options telling who will be able to see and connect with you:
    1. AirDrop SelectOff – turns AirDrop off
    2. Contacts Only – only your contacts can connect with you
    3. Everyone – anyone who has AirDrop turned on can connect with you

  7. A menu will appear at the bottom of the screen with the people that you can share the file with
  8. Tap on the user that to want to send the file to
  9. The receiving user will get a message asking if they want to accept or decline the transfer
  10. After accepting the transfer, the file will send

Receiving files using Airdrop:

  1. After the file is done transferring, tap Yes to import the vocabulary file
  2. Name the file, then tap Save
  3. Once the file is done importing, tap Vocab->Choose New Vocab
  4. Find the file you just transferred and open

If you end up using this, let us know! If you’ve also used Airdrop for any other functions in school or at home, tell us about it. We’re definitely interested in seeing where this technology will go and if we’ll have an opportunity to implement it in any of our apps.
