123 Token Me App
I’ve chosen to write about one of my favorite apps for working with kids on the spectrum in honor of Autism Awareness month in April. 123 Token Me is an app that makes interactive token boards. I love this app because it’s very easy to use and really motivates kids. You can quickly make changes to the boards which is important when you’re working with a student and have to change the plan on the fly. There is a lite version for $0.99 which lets you try it out and make one board. The full version is $9.99 and allows users to make an unlimited number of boards. It also comes with more token options than the lite version. Find it in the App Store here.
What is a Token Board?
For anyone who is unfamiliar, token boards are behavior modification tools that allow a student to earn a reward for demonstrating positive behaviors over a set period of time. The reward is set ahead of time and can be chosen by the student. Token boards are great because they focus on the positive and give praise for student’s success, rather than focusing on negative behaviors.
Using 123 Token Me
Setting up a token board on the app is really easy. You start by writing your student’s name and a goal for them to work on. In my example I wrote “using your words when upset” to be our goal. You can also add a picture of them which my students really enjoy. To set up the board, you’re given a wide selection of background colors and token images. The lite version offers the following tokens: superheroes, cookies, soccer balls, smiley faces, or stars. The full version comes with even more options. You select how many tokens are needed to get the reward. They also have a big library of pictures to use as rewards including common food items and activities like music, reading, TV, art, and toys. Again, you can add your own picture which is great if your student has a specific toy or item they want as their reward.
The app is totally customizable and comes with various options in settings. You can choose different sounds for when you get a token, when the timer goes off, and when they have earned all of the tokens. The app also comes with the features of a calendar you can add events into and a notes section for each student.
The classrooms I work in utilize the board multiple times a day. The teachers reset the board after the student has earned all of their tokens. I use it within my sessions to help students work on their expected behaviors and decrease problematic behaviors. As I mentioned before, my students are really motivated to use the app because of the interactive tokens and pictures. When you click on a token to show the student has earned it, it makes a sound and performs an action. Once the student has earned all of the tokens, it makes another sound (you can change this in settings) to show they have earned their reward. Check out this fun app now!
